Tugs
This service provides assistance to International Shipping and particularly to cruise ships and tankers in berthing,
un-berthing and towing within local waters. It also provides limited towing and assistance to stranded vessels around
Bermuda and offshore Rescue and Salvage.
The Department maintains two large harbour tugs, "Powerful" and "Faithful" which have a limited offshore capability.
Both are capable of supplying fuel, water and supplies to vessels in protected waters as well as offshore.
They also have advanced fire fighting capabilities, oil recovery tanks, oil-dispersing booms and automatic towing
winches are are able to proceed to sea in favorable conditions, if required for towing rescue work.
The Department also has one medium tug, "Edward M. Stowe", which operates as a harbour tug as well as having a long
range for Search and Rescue and ocean towing. It is also capable of supplying fuel, water and supplies to vessels in
protected waters as well as offshore. The vessel has advance fire-fighting capabilities.
Employment opportunities in tug service range from Seaman/Leading Seaman who handle the lines on deck and Tug Engineers
assisted by Oilers who operate the mechanical and electrical plant on board the vessel.
The Tug Pilot/Captain is in charge of the tug overall including its operation and handling. Work hours are Monday
through Friday from 0830 to 1630 and may include weekends and overtime or irregular hours due to shipping.
